If you have an air conditioner that runs constantly, contains a buildup of ice, and blows warm air into the home, then you may need to have the unit inspected for a coolant leak. Some leaks are extremely small and may not need to be repaired right away. However, the air conditioner will need to be refilled with coolant if you want to enjoy cool air in your home. You May Poison Yourself
Freon and other refrigerants used inside air conditioners are toxic, especially if they contain chlorofluorocarbons. Chlorofluorocarbons are extremely volatile chemicals that evaporate into the air quickly. The chemicals displace the air as they evaporate and this makes it easy to breathe them in if you are nearby. This can cause refrigerant poisoning. You may have trouble breathing when this happens and you might also notice your throat swelling. In serious cases, these types of breathing difficulties can lead to death if your body is deprived of oxygen for too long. The heart can be affected by the inhalation of refrigerants as well. You may notice an irregular heartbeat. A burning sensation across the eyes and nose can be symptoms of exposure too.
Unfortunately, refrigerants used in air conditioners are odorless and colorless. This means that you may not notice that you are exposing yourself to the harmful chemicals until you feel symptoms of refrigerant poisoning. If you are inexperienced, you may easily expose the air and yourself to the air conditioning refrigerant. You May Overfill The System
If you do manage to refill your air conditioning system with refrigerant without poisoning yourself, you may accidentally overfill or overcharge the system. This can cause a substantial increase in pressure as the refrigerant runs through the copper lines. The refrigerant will then have a difficult time changing phases from a liquid to a gas or from a gas to a liquid. The phase change is necessary to cool air and to then release heat outdoors.
If phase changes cannot occur, the AC unit will still run, but you will probably not feel cool air in your house. Also, refrigerant that is under too much pressure may cause damage to the compressor pump that moves the coolant throughout the system. The pump may then fail to work and an expensive replacement may be needed. Even if the pump does not break completely, coolant may leak out of the pump or out of other openings in the system.
